Red Sparrow is set in modern-day Russia, it’s a brutal spy thriller, which revolves around Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) – an injured elite prima ballerina, whose sick mother depends on her support.
She is pulled into the world of espionage by her uncle, who has links to the top of the Kremlin. If she accepts her mission, she will join Sparrow school and train as a spy.
Her mark is Nash (Joel Edgerton). An American CIA agent who knows a prominent American is colluding with Russians.
With the two working against the clock to catch the other, Red Sparrow is full of unexpected twists and turns and goes deep into the underbelly of American-Russian espionage.

- Jason Matthews penned the novel Red Sparrow, after serving 33 years in the CIA.
- Critics said Dominika endured too much violence. But Jennifer Lawrence argued she grows in power and gains the upper-hand on the men that tried to control her.
- Red Sparrow features grand cities, such as Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and London. The filmmakers originally wanted to shoot in Helsinki instead of Budapest to align with the book. But they fell in love with Budapest so much they formally changed the location.
