Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is stuck on Mars. His team believe he died during a solar storm.

After the storm, he returns to the crew’s surface habitat to treat his wounds and repair his suit. He soon realises to truly survive on Mars he needs to colonise the land and grow as much food as possible until help arrives, which could take years.

Facts about The Martian

  • Andy Weir wrote The Martian and self-published it in 2011.
  • Weir’s fulltime job was a software developer, he was not a professional scientist or writer.
  • NASA put a page of the script in the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle.
  • Art directors filmed the Mars’ landscapes shots in southern Jordan.
  • Weir originally wrote the book and published each chapter online to a loyal, but small following of people who helped him fine-tune it.
