The Shape of Water begins with Elisa (played by Sally Hawkins) who is mute and communicates through Sign Language. She works as a cleaner at a top-secret government laboratory in Baltimore. The era is 1962 and America is at the height of the Cold War.
One day, the lab receives a mysterious creature (played by Doug Jones) from the Amazon River. It has the appearance of an amphibian man. Elisa and the mysterious creature strike up a romantic relationship using Sign Language, but can they escape the lab and live happily ever after?

- Elisa lives above the Elgin Theatre and it is located in Toronto.
- At the Golden Globes party in 2014, Del Toro told Sally “I’m writing a movie for you! You fall in love with a fish-man”.
